Spaces Evolving into Meaningful Platforms

by Park Junghoon, Team Leader  at CJ CGV

Spaces are no longer just functional areas; they are evolving into meaningful platforms connected to human experiences. This transformation is evident across various industries, including hospitality, retail, and cultural spaces. Today, spaces go beyond being mere places of stay or use, becoming mediums that create unique value. The demand for offline experiences has significantly accelerated this shift, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Global trends like wellness have become pivotal keywords in the design and operation of spaces. Wellness encompasses all activities and states aimed at enhancing individual health and happiness. Through this lens, spaces are transformed into tools that provide sensory and emotional satisfaction to customers. In the pursuit of happiness, people seek diverse experiences to understand and rediscover themselves, emphasizing the role of digital media and creative content.
Digital media and content play a crucial role in enhancing the experiential value of spaces. They act as auxiliary tools to set the mood or reinforce the message of a space. At times, they redefine a space's identity and serve as primary elements offering extraordinary experiences.

The Start of an Experience: Lobby Media
The lobby, the first area customers encounter, is a critical space that shapes first impressions. It also serves as the heart of wellness and experience. In such spaces, digital media and content are pivotal in strengthening identity and maximizing customer immersion.

A prime example is the massive media wall at Salesforce headquarters in San Francisco, unveiled in 2016. Given the technological advancements of the time, this 12K resolution media wall was a groundbreaking innovation. Its ‘U’-shaped design and dynamic display of digital water breathed life into the space. The scene of the digital waterfall cascading from the top to meet below recreated the physical properties of water, offering a unique visual experience. This piece remains a quintessential example of how digital media can redefine spatial design.

Another noteworthy example is the ‘Aurora’ installation at Inspire Resort in Incheon. Spanning 150 meters, this installation integrates LED media across the lobby's ceiling and walls, maximizing visual impact. The signature shows, performed every hour and on the half-hour, transformed the lobby from a mere waiting area into an immersive experience.

Digital Media in Hotels & Resorts
Hotels and resorts are evolving beyond places of accommodation into multi-functional spaces that deliver unforgettable experiences. At the core of this transformation lies digital media and content. For instance, the LED media on the ceiling of the Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian Resort in Las Vegas realistically replicates the sky, offering visitors a unique experience of day and night.

Another compelling example is the Waterhouse at Ananti Cove in Busan. Inspired by a jungle motif, it features tropical rainforest designs and digital media art showcasing various animals. Visitors take photos and share them, amplifying the space's value and achieving viral marketing effects that go beyond mere exhibition.

Lastly, the collaboration between Japan's Mifuneyama Rakuen Hotel and TeamLab resulted in ‘A Forest Where Gods Live,’ showcasing the new possibilities of space. By merging nature with digital media, this immersive experience transformed the hotel garden into a canvas, simultaneously achieving artistic value and economic impact.

The Center of Large Media: Airport Installations
International airports are among the spaces where digital media plays a prominent role. The immersive multimedia system at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), created in collaboration with Moment Factory, redefined customer experience and elevated the airport's status.
Singapore's Changi Airport also presents remarkable examples with ‘The Wonderfall’ and ‘Dreamscape.’ The digital waterfall and the ever-changing digital sky leave travelers in awe, transforming the airport from a transit space into an experiential destination.

Sustainability in the Media and Content Industry
The digital media and content industry continues to evolve but faces numerous challenges, including sustainable energy usage, content lifecycle management, and long-term operational strategies. To address these, CJ CGV introduced the premium media art subscription service ‘LED.ART,’ proposing a sustainable content operation model.
Through the integration of technology and art, digital media enhances architectural and spatial intentions, playing a vital role in realizing the value of wellness. These innovations are opening new possibilities for the global hospitality industry, with even more advancements anticipated in the future.
