YUHWAN JANG : The Art of Harmony in Diversity

by LED.ART EDITORIAL

The landscapes of nature we think we know are transformed into unfamiliar yet enchanting realms through the hands of artist Jang Yoo-hwan. Using digital data as his medium, Jang constructs surreal representations of nature where each tiny particle carries emotion, blurring the lines between reality and imagination with his unique artistic vision.
In this interview, we explore his signature piece Floating Winter, his creative inspirations drawn from the natural world, and how he balances everyday life with his artistic journey.

Q1. Could you briefly introduce yourself?
A1. Hello, I’m Jang Yuhwan, a media artist.

Q2. Could you introduce one of your works featured on LED.ART?
A2. I’d like to talk about Floating Winter. I created this piece as a way to express my perspective on winter. There are many symbols associated with the season, but I wanted to portray winter in a way that felt familiar yet not cliché. Using particle systems—one of my favorite techniques—I imagined a grand flow in which each particle represents a winter-related object. If you look closely, you’ll find ornaments that evoke Christmas, snow-covered pinecones, swirling snow, and even conifer needles reminiscent of a holiday tree. Each individual element was chosen to evoke the feeling of winter and Christmas, drawing viewers into that seasonal atmosphere.

Q3. Where do you usually draw inspiration from?
A3. I’m deeply inspired by nature. What fascinates me is how nature reflects both unity and diversity. At first glance, nature appears harmonious and whole, but the more closely you observe, the more you notice the countless diverse elements that make up that harmony. This interplay between individual parts and cohesive beauty is where I find a lot of creative energy.

Q4. What tools do you use in your creative process?
A4. I primarily use Houdini, a comprehensive 3D animation tool often used in visual effects production. While it’s typically used for VFX, I employ it as a medium for creating media art. It’s not just about executing my ideas—I believe the tool itself influences the work. Exploring and incorporating Houdini’s many technical features often sparks new ideas. So rather than seeing it as a passive tool, I consider it a creative partner that I interact with throughout the process.

Q5. Is there a message you hope to convey through your work?
A5. I enjoy emphasizing the diversity that exists within unity—something I often express using particles. Though particles flow as one, each has its own unique attributes: size, shape, speed, and direction. I see each particle as a person, an individual being. I believe that just like in my artwork, our society becomes more beautiful when our differences come together in harmony. My hope is that those who see my work feel inspired to embrace others with more understanding and tolerance—like the French word tolérance—and that we move toward a warmer, more compassionate world.

Q6. When do you usually work?
A6. This is a bit personal, but I’m not only an artist—I’m also a father of two daughters. My main creative time is between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., while my eldest daughter is at school. In the evenings, I spend time with my family, and after the kids go to bed, I often continue working from 10 p.m. to around 1 a.m.

Q7. Can you describe your workspace?
A7. Since I’m raising kids, I work from home. That means efficiency and deep focus are absolutely essential.

Q8. What are your future plans with LED.ART?
A8. First, I hope to share more high-quality works with audiences through LED.ART. I’m also planning a seasonal series—Floating Spring for spring, Floating Summer for summer, and so on. These works will continue to explore themes of nature and transformation across time.
