A Vision Beyond Reality: KOES
Editorial by LED.ART
KOES (Hyeongseok Kang), a digital artist based in Seoul, blends familiar realities with unexpected imagination to create witty and whimsical works that exist on the edge of contrast. By freely combining elements such as reality and fantasy, nature and artificiality, the familiar and the strange, he delivers more than just visually striking images—his works unfold like playful scenes that invite viewers into a unique visual experience.

What makes KOES's work stand out is its bright and lighthearted energy. Unlike the cold abstraction or heavy symbolism often found in digital art, his creations spark genuine emotional responses through subtle humor and unexpected twists. His pieces feel like joyful strolls through surreal landscapes, leaving viewers with both a smile and a sense of wonder. Now, let’s take a closer look at KOES’s creative world and hear directly from the artist about his inspirations and process.
Q 1. Please introduce yourself briefly.
A. Hello. My name is Hyeongseok Kang, and I work as a motion graphic artist under the nickname KOES. My works featured on LED.ART include the BOOMING BEAR spring and winter series, as well as the piece titled RISING.
Q 2. Can you introduce one of your works featured on LED.ART?
A. BOOMING BEAR is a somewhat whimsical yet humorous piece that features a giant teddy bear suddenly bursting with a loud “pop” in the middle of a serene plain. RISING is a work that visualizes a sunrise, depicting objects emerging from the water’s surface and radiating light as the sun rises.

Q 3. Where do you usually get inspiration for your work?
A. I often draw inspiration from sculptural works and installation art. Based on those ideas, I tend to create my pieces by applying them to everyday situations, spaces, and objects.
Q 4. What tools do you use for your work?
A. I mainly use a 3D program called Cinema 4D (C4D).
Q 5. What message do you want to convey through your work?
A. When creating my work, I try to incorporate visual “wow” factors or witty elements that can surprise the viewer. I believe media art is a medium meant to be experienced and felt in physical spaces, so I hope those who encounter my work can enjoy it visually and gain a fresh, memorable experience.
Q 6. What time of day do you usually work?
A. I usually start working in the late afternoon and continue into the night. However, my schedule varies slightly between client work and personal art projects.
Q 7. Can you describe your workspace?
A. The studio I work in is a shared space with other freelancers like myself. It has a cozy, aesthetically pleasing atmosphere—almost like a café—which inspires me a lot just by being there.
Q 8. What are your future collaboration plans with LED.ART?
A. For my next piece, I’m planning to reinterpret underwater visuals in my own artistic style to create an aquarium-like experience that can be enjoyed in an urban setting. As for a second upcoming work, while RISING was inspired by the visual of objects ascending with the sunrise, this new piece will explore the opposite—capturing the imagery of objects cascading down from the sky.
