Same Sea, Different Perspectives: The Multilayered Landscape Painted by Media Art
by LED.ART EDITORIAL
When the perspective shifts, the sea tells a different story
Few people have never seen the sea. Yet, how each person remembers the sea can be vastly different. For some, it is the tranquil afternoon ocean shimmering with gentle sunlight; for others, it's the fierce waves crashing ashore, or the underwater world where whales and seaweed dance in harmony. In this way, a single element of nature transforms into entirely different forms of art depending on the perspective through which it is viewed.
Media art is the contemporary artistic language capable of physically and sensorially realizing these multilayered ways of seeing.
1. Scenes of the Sea from Above: Visual Patterns of Glimmer and Waves
Seen from above, the sea evokes a completely different kind of perception from the traditional viewpoint. The shimmering glints of sunlight reflecting on the surface and the flowing waves become a kind of moving pattern—a language of light and motion. Media art translates this into data-driven visual patterns, offering viewers an immersive experience that feels as though they are part of nature itself. From this perspective, the sea is no longer just a landscape to be observed—it becomes a scene entered through an infiltrating gaze.

2. The Sea at Eye Level: The Rhythm of Waves and the Aesthetics of Motion
Standing on the shore and facing the sea, one is met with a vast horizon and the undulating waves that evoke a deep, emotional resonance. This eye-level perspective centers on the dynamism and aesthetic of flowing motion. Through media art, the sea’s energy can be expressed in a variety of ways—from the powerful surge of crashing waves to the gentle, rhythmic lapping of calm waters. Such expressions go beyond the feeling of merely “standing before the sea,” offering instead an expanded sensory experience—as if breathing with the ocean itself.

3. Underwater : A Deepening Gaze and Ecological Imagination
While we may find it difficult to directly experience the world beneath the surface, digital technology breaks that boundary—inviting us to explore the underwater ecosystem through a new lens. The breathing rhythms of coral, the movements of fish both small and large, and the subtle currents of seawater all enter the realm of art. Depending on the viewer’s perspective and emotional response, the underwater world is reinterpreted through diverse colors and expressive techniques.

Same Nature, Different Perspectives.
Media art goes beyond simply replicating nature—it elevates the very way of seeing into a form of artistic expression. The question of how we look transforms into a deeper inquiry: how do we invite others to experience?
This shift in perspective is at the core of media art’s boundless potential for artistic expansion.
In this magazine, we explore that idea through the theme of the sea—presenting nature not as it is, but as it can be reimagined through the gaze.
